Consumerism quickly took over in America after World War 2 when there was a need for an economic boost. Since then, we have slowly fallen into a pit of materialistic ways and have let it take over our how we live life. Think about how many pens you have thrown away in your life? Or how many times you have gone shopping just because you were bored. Or how many plastic bags you have wasted after a trip to the store where you bought more pointless things that you really did not NEED.
I am guilty of this too but have come to find myself thinking about all of the meaningless things that I have bought, which have contributed to more waste on our planet. It makes me sick to my stomach. Next time you are about to buy a piece of clothing or an electronic, give it some good thought. Is it an item that you A) Want: have a desire to possess. Or B) Need: require because it is essential.
I recently watched a video called "The Story of Stuff", which gives a look into our materialistic and consumption patterns. As well as, the number of environmental and social issues that consumerism has caused in America. The video is very well made and is entertaining in the way that it is animated. Please give it a watch, I have linked it below. I promise it will give you a more open outlook on why we need to cut down as a planet on our constant cycle of buying and trashing items. We can cut down, it does not have to be all at once, but it NEEDS to happen. Let's do this together and help save our planet before it is too late.
Thanks for reading! If you have any tips on how to cut down on our waste or how to stop buying pointless stuff, feel free to leave a comment below!
